I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Jen K's Reviews:

At least the cover is pretty

The Astral Library by Kate Quinn

April 8, 2026 by Jen K 1 Comment

Damn … this book is going to be one of those The Last Jedi situations for me, I can already tell. In other words, I was disappointed with the novel/didn’t love it for my own story reasons but a lot of the people leaving negative reviews are doing it for ridiculous conservative reasons. It’s like, “I didn’t have an issue with those things, you book-banning transphobes, I just wanted a more engaging main character/overall story.” It starts off strong, following the main character and narrator, […]

The things people do for their siblings

The Starter Ex by Mia Sosa

March 25, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have tendency to forget character names rather quickly, even if I mostly retain plot. As a result, I kept wondering if this novel was going to be a sequel to When Javi Dumped Mari. After all, the cover art had the same feel and style, and even though The Worst Best Man and The Wedding Crasher are in the same universe, they aren’t listed as a series. Vanessa absolutely could have been one of Mari’s friends whose name I had forgotten. Turns out, unless […]

Lost Children, Almost Forgotten History

Keeper of Lost Children by Sadeqa Johnson

March 25, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have never read this author before but I was intrigued by the premise when I saw this on a few “Anticipated 2026 Releases” lists. The novel follows three different characters with different starting points, and naturally the stories converge. Ozzie is an African American soldier in Germany in 1948 – right when Truman passes the order to desegregate the military. Ethel Gathers is on an accompanied tour to Germany as her husband’s dependent in 1951. She is one of the few Black officers’ wives […]

We’re up all night to get lucky

Three Kinds of Lucky by Kim Harrison

March 25, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I read the original novels from The Hollows series (I couldn’t bring myself to read the follow ups since she had written the perfect epilogue and I didn’t want it to no longer count) but haven’t picked anything up from Kim Harrison in a while. The Hollows as a series ended up having such extensive world building as the series progressed that I really appreciated but Rachel Morgan as a character took a while to grow on me (definitely took more books than Kate Daniels […]

Come for the cats, stay for … also the cats

Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter by Heather Fawcett

March 11, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Like many other Cannonballers, I was familiar with Heather Fawcett because of the Emily Wilde novels, so when I saw her next novel was going to involve a magical cat shelter, I was in, even though I hadn’t enjoyed the third Emily Wilde novel as much. Overall, I had a really fun time with this but it really was primarily due to the cats and the cat shelter, and I actually would have enjoyed even more cats, and day to day life at the shelter. […]

The Bruising of Qilwa

After an empire fails

The Bruising of Qilwa by Naseem Jamnia

March 4, 2026 by Jen K Leave a Comment

In an effort to meet people after moving to a new town, I have joined an abundance of book clubs. This novel was for the second one that I’m doing through the local independent bookstore, the Queer Lit book club. We met last week and it was such a fun time; I even ended up staying an hour past the meeting talking to some other participants about books and video games (the games was more of a “listening” section for me), especially Dragon Age, since […]
